Scroll through for our three-step summer prep routine that will help your hair resist all that sun and salt damage, and give it a healthy, smooth glow instead.
Deep hydrate
When it comes to dry hair, there are two basic reasons for this common issue that most of us struggle with.
The first is that the skin on your scalp doesn’t produce enough oil to naturally moisturize your hair —
this can either be hereditary or just something that happens over time and as we age.
Deep hydrating your scalp works wonders when your hair needs some help with locking the healthy moisture in. The essential rule here is stepping up your conditioning and hair mask game during the summer.
We’ve got the two best remedies for hydrating your hair inside and out :
Keep yourself properly hydrated
We know you’ve heard this so many times before…. But we can’t stress enough how much proper water intake helps in keeping your hair shiny and healthy.
Proper hydration helps grow your hair —did you know that dehydration immediately halts hair growth?
Well-hydrated scalps won’t produce dandruff either; so drinking plenty of water alone eliminates many of the hair problems that we face during the summer. Remember to always start your day with a glass of water, and make sure to increase your water intake considering how much you sweat during the summer heat.
Brown sugar + olive oil hair pack
The second secret for a well-hydrated, glowing hair we’ve got for you is this amazing hair mask! Mix two tablespoons of brown sugar with one tablespoon of virgin olive oil in a bowl, and apply to your hair from scalp to ends. Let it sit for at least 20 minutes before thoroughly rinsing it.
This hair pack is perfect when you want to deeply hydrate both your hair and your scalp.
Brown sugar works wonders by exfoliating the skin on your scalp, getting rid of any dead skin cells or hair product residue build-up. This allows your hair to grow faster and healthier. The second ingredient — virgin olive oil—helps by locking in the water molecules into your hair.
Olive oil is known as the Mediterranean secret to glowing skin and hair, but remember that the kind of oil you get is important. Extra virgin olive oil is made from pure, cold-pressed olives, and this is the one you ideally want to be putting on your hair and skin. Regular olive oil is usually a blend, including both cold-pressed and processed oils, and it is not as healthy as the extra virgin one.
Moisturize & nourish
The second reason for dry hair could be a condition or structure of the hair that is causing the moisture to escape, which in the end leads to dry hair.
UV rays, harsh or dry weather conditions, and swimming in pools or the ocean can all strip your hair of its natural, healthy moisture.
That’s why it’s extremely important to take special care of your hair during the hot summer days, by nourishing and moisturizing it.
Avocado + honey + coconut hair pack
Mash half of an avocado and then mix it with a tablespoon of honey and two tablespoons of coconut oil. Make sure that all the ingredients are properly mixed into a smooth paste, then apply to your hair from top to bottom, and let sit for at least 20 minutes before rinsing it.
Avocado is a natural fat, that will help keep your hair moisturized and nourished, while also protecting it from the damage caused by excessive summer heat, wind, or dry air. This magical ingredient contains around 20 different vitamins and minerals which, among others, repair split ends and promote hair growth.
Honey is a natural humectant and emollient, helping you keep the moisture locked in your hair, while also smoothing and softening it. Lastly, coconut oil will top off this miracle mask as it is rich in fatty acids, making the other ingredients penetrate more deeply into your hair than the regular conditioners, while also preventing hair breakage.
Protect from heat & sun damage
Both previous points are very helpful as preventative measures to help your hair beat the summer heat by making it healthier from the inside, but there’s only so much your hair can take when it comes to harsh weather conditions.
During the hot summer days, you need to make sure to keep your hair protected from the outside, too!
Take one of those big, fancy straw hats with you to the beach, or dress up your hair with a stylish head scarf —your hair will thank you, and you’ll also add a twist to your summer outfits!
