Roe v. Wade was Overturned - What Does That Mean For You?

Roe v. Wade was overturned and now has us all wondering, what’s next? We don’t have the answers, but we can tell you what changes to expect in your Bellabeat app and how we’re working to protect your privacy.

We believe it's your data, so it’s your choice.

With that in mind, we’re enhancing our security as a stance against the oppression of women’s reproductive rights.

Bellabeat's Action Plan

Bellabeat stands in solidarity with women’s rights and we’re taking action to ensure that every woman in our community is protected.

We won’t just make empty promises to protect your data, we’re making actual changes.

Since our launch, your data has been and still is safe on our servers which are protected with extensive safety protocols and an internal security team that does regular check-ups and revisions. We have never had a data leak and have never shared or sold your data to third parties. But we’ve realized all this effort and our commitment to safekeeping data just isn’t enough when women’s rights are being compromised. That’s why we’re strengthening our mobile app security system with
Private Key Encryption (PKE), a technology that irreversibly encrypts user data, making it only accessible through a personal password.

Implementing the new security feature puts the power back into the hands of the woman as the end-user. It gives her the choice to decide who can have access to her health data and ensures that not even Bellabeat can benefit from collecting end-user data in any shape or form. This includes internal research or product improvements. PKE enhancements are set to roll out late July across all products.

Your Body. Your Data.
Here's How You're Protected

Private Key Encryption fully protects your stored data on Bellabeats servers. Here’s how it works:

At your request, Bellabeat will implement PKE technology and encrypt all of your reproductive health data stored in the app.

You’ll be prompted to create a private 8-character password.

You will be the only one with access to your key and your unencrypted data.

Your Data. Your Choice.

It may seem like a lot to take in, but it's simple. Here's a breakdown of what PKE security means:

  • No one but you, the password holder, can read your data
  • No one can lawfully or unlawfully access an unencrypted version of your data via our servers
  • Bellabeat is unable to read or help a third party decrypt your data
  • Hacking or attempting to decrypt your personal data without your password is virtually impossible

Bellabeat also offers the option to completely wipe your data through a 24-hour irreversible wiping process.

We stand with women's rights. It's your data and your choice. Don't delete your period apps, we need them now more than ever.
